Ready for the next stage? Upgrade their Rookie to a true freewheel setup so they can pedal backwards freely, coast naturally and rely on their hand brakes just like a bigger kids bike.

Key Features

The Kidvelo Rookie Complete Free Wheel Kit replaces the standard coaster-brake rear wheel on compatible Rookie bikes, giving confident young riders a more traditional freewheel riding experience as their skills progress.

Quick Compatibility Guide

  • Available Sizes: 14-Inch & 18-Inch
  • 14-Inch Version: Kidvelo Rookie 14 Convertible Balance Bike
  • 18-Inch Version: Kidvelo Rookie 18 Convertible Balance Bike
  • Product Type: Complete single rear wheel upgrade
  • Freewheel Function: Pedals can rotate backwards freely
  • Braking: Rider relies on the bike’s hand-operated brakes
  • Best For: Confident pedal riders, skill progression & BMX-track riding
  • Installation: Replacement rear wheel requires fitting before use

What Does a Freewheel Actually Do?

With a freewheel rear wheel fitted, your child can stop pedalling and coast without the pedals continuing to drive the wheel.

They can also rotate the pedals backwards freely without activating the rear coaster brake.

This creates the type of pedalling and coasting action they’ll encounter on many larger children’s and adult bikes.

Freewheel vs Standard Coaster-Brake Wheel

The standard Australian Rookie 14 and Rookie 18 are supplied with a coaster-brake rear wheel.

With the standard setup, pedalling backwards activates the coaster brake.

With the Free Wheel Kit installed, the pedals can rotate backwards freely and your child uses the bike’s hand-operated brakes to slow down and stop.

Ideal for Riders Who Prefer Hand Brakes

Some children naturally take to hand brakes and find a back-pedal coaster brake less intuitive.

For riders who can already operate their hand brakes confidently, the freewheel setup can provide a more natural-feeling progression into conventional pedal-bike riding.

Helps Develop Independent Pedal Skills

The ability to pedal, stop pedalling, coast and reposition the pedals gives children another opportunity to develop control and coordination as their cycling skills advance.

Easier Pedal Positioning

Because the pedals can rotate backwards freely, riders can reposition them before setting off without accidentally engaging a coaster brake.

This can be particularly useful when learning stronger starts, standing riding positions and more advanced bike handling.

Great for BMX-Track Riding

A freewheel setup is a popular option for children who enjoy riding their Rookie around BMX tracks, where the ability to coast and freely reposition the pedals can make the bike feel more natural as skills progress.

Genuine Kidvelo Rookie Upgrade

This isn’t a generic rear wheel adapted to fit.

The Free Wheel Kit is designed specifically for compatible Kidvelo Rookie 14 and Rookie 18 Balance-to-Pedal Bikes, giving you the correct wheel option for the bike.

Choose the Correct Wheel Size

Select the version that matches the Rookie your child owns:

  • 14-Inch: Rookie 14 only
  • 18-Inch: Rookie 18 only

This freewheel upgrade is not designed for the Rookie 12 or Rookie 24.

Important Australian Bike Setup Information

Kidvelo Rookie bikes sold in Australia are supplied with their standard coaster-brake rear wheel installed.

The Free Wheel Kit is an optional upgrade and is supplied separately. It must be correctly installed before use.

Important Rider Readiness

Installing the freewheel removes the rear wheel’s back-pedal braking function.

Your child should therefore be able to confidently and consistently operate the bike’s hand brakes before riding with the freewheel setup.

If you’re unsure whether your child is ready for the upgrade, contact our team before purchasing and we’ll help you decide.

Why Parents LOVE IT

🚲 A More Natural Big-Bike Feel
Your child can pedal, coast and rotate the pedals backwards freely — helping the Rookie feel more like the larger bikes they’ll ride as their skills develop.

✋ Perfect for Kids Who Prefer Hand Brakes
For confident riders who already use their hand brakes well, the freewheel removes the back-pedal brake and lets them focus on conventional hand-brake control.

📈 Extends Their Riding Progression
Instead of replacing a Rookie your child already loves, the freewheel gives you another way to adapt the bike as their confidence and riding ability advance.

🏁 Great for BMX Tracks & Advanced Riding
Free coasting and easy pedal repositioning make this a popular upgrade for riders beginning to explore BMX tracks, standing riding and more advanced bike skills.

Change-of-Mind & Incorrect Size Returns

For approved change-of-mind returns or exchanges, return shipping costs are the responsibility of the customer.

Where the part supplied matches your order and product description, selecting the incorrect wheel size or ordering the part for an incompatible bike is treated as a change-of-mind return or exchange, rather than a shipping or fulfilment error.

  • Unused
  • Uninstalled
  • Undamaged and unmarked
  • Complete with all supplied components

We strongly recommend confirming your Rookie model and wheel size before installation.

If We Send the Wrong Item

If Xchange Sports makes an error with your order — such as sending the wrong wheel size or product — we’ll provide a pre-paid return label at no cost to you and arrange the appropriate solution.

Faulty or Defective Products

If you believe your Free Wheel Kit has a manufacturing fault or defect, please stop using the bike and contact us before returning the part.

Depending on the circumstances, the appropriate solution may include a repair, replacement or refund.

Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply independently of any written warranty and cannot be excluded by this policy. Consumer guarantee rights may also continue beyond the stated warranty period where applicable.

Check Compatibility Before Ordering

The Free Wheel Kit is available for:

  • Kidvelo Rookie 14: Select 14-Inch
  • Kidvelo Rookie 18: Select 18-Inch

Do not order this product for a Rookie 12 or Rookie 24.

If you’re unsure which Rookie model you own, send our team a photo of the bike before ordering and we’ll help you identify it.

Important Freewheel Safety Information

Fitting the Free Wheel Kit changes how the rear wheel braking system operates.

With the freewheel installed, pedalling backwards will no longer activate the coaster brake. The rider must use the bike’s hand-operated brakes to slow down and stop.

Before allowing your child to ride with the freewheel setup:

  • Make sure they can comfortably reach the brake levers
  • Confirm they can apply the hand brakes confidently and consistently
  • Check both hand brakes are correctly adjusted and operating effectively
  • Make sure the rear wheel is installed and secured correctly
  • Check chain tension and wheel alignment before riding
  • Practise braking in a safe, flat area before returning to normal riding

Installation

The Free Wheel Kit is supplied as a replacement rear wheel upgrade and requires installation on the compatible Rookie bike.

If you’re not confident correctly fitting and checking the rear wheel, chain and braking system, we recommend having the upgrade installed or inspected by a competent bicycle mechanic.

Keep the Original Coaster-Brake Wheel

We recommend keeping your original Rookie coaster-brake rear wheel after installing the freewheel.

This gives you the option to return the bike to its original configuration later if required.
